How to Choose a Backpack for Your Child’s Age

Choosing the right backpack for your child isn’t just about colour or style

Not every backpack suits every kid. What works for a toddler heading to daycare isn't quite right for a Year 6 student lugging around a laptop and sports gear, and picking the wrong size usually means sore shoulders or a bag your child has already grown out of.

Why Age (and Stage) Matters More Than Style

It's tempting to pick a backpack based on the print your child loves most, and that's fair enough, they're the one wearing it. But size, weight and structure matter just as much. A bag that's too big will swing around and throw off their balance. One that's too small won't fit what they actually need to carry. The right choice depends on what stage they're at, not just what's trending in the playground.

Choosing by Age Group

Daycare and Kindy (Ages 0-3)

At this age, kids aren't carrying much, a spare set of clothes, a hat, maybe a small toy. Our Mini backpack is built for exactly this stage: 30cm high, 24cm wide and 13cm deep, with an 9L capacity. It's the smallest in our range and sits comfortably on tiny shoulders. If your daycare or educator asks for nappies, bottles, food and a sheet to be packed daily, size up to the Junior backpack instead, it holds a lot more without overwhelming a small back.

Early Primary School (Ages 3-8)

This is the perfect entry-level school backpack for preppies and kids starting Year 1 and 2. Our Junior backpack is sized at 42cm high, 27cm wide and 15cm deep, with a 17.6L capacity, roomy enough for books, lunch boxes, drink bottles and extras, but still scaled for younger kids.

Upper Primary School (Ages 8+)

Upper primary kids are juggling more variety, not just more weight. Library books, sports gear, iPads and a lunch bag all need a home. Our Campus backpack steps up to 43cm high, 29cm wide and 19cm deep, with a 23.7L capacity, giving them room to fit it all in without overpacking.

High School (Ages 13+)

By high school, backpacks need to handle laptops, textbooks and a genuinely heavier daily load. The Campus backpack is built to fit up to a 17" laptop, along with a standard lunch bag, so it carries through to high school without needing an upgrade. For PE days or after-school sport, a duffle bag is worth having on hand so sweaty gear isn't sharing space with books.

Key Features to Look for at Any Age

Regardless of age, there are a few essential features every kids’ backpack should have:

  • Lightweight design to avoid strain
  • Adjustable straps for a comfortable fit
  • Durable and easy-to-clean materials
  • Enough compartments for organisation

Getting the Fit Right

Once you've got the right size range, the fit still matters. The base of the bag should sit around hip height, not sagging down near the knees, and the top shouldn't sit above shoulder height either. If your child is leaning forward to compensate for weight, the bag's either too big or too heavy for them to carry comfortably.

Choosing the right backpack isn't about finding the most fashionable option, it's about matching it to what your child actually needs to carry and how their body's built to carry it. Get that right and the print they love is just a bonus.
